The falling price of oil is the biggest energy story in the world right now. It's bringing back cheap oil to the United States while wreaking havoc on oil-producing countries like Russia and Venezuela.

But the big question is why the crude oil prices are falling? Back in June 2014, the price of Brent crude was up around $115 per barrel. As of 3rd Feb 2016, it had fallen to $ 29 per barrel (Brent Crude Oil), down over 70%.

For the last 6 or 7 years, oil prices has been on the rise, maintaining a level of around $100 since 2010. The main reason for this rise can be attributed to the factor of increase in oil consumption in countries like China and India, and conflicts in key oil nations like Iraq. So, as the supply of oil could not keep pace with the demand it led to increase in its prices.

Oil prices is determined by actual demand and supply situation to large extent. Demand for oil is closely related to the prevailing economic conditions. There other factors also at work. These includes, increase in usage due to change in weather conditions, like harsher winter means increase in consumption. Political situation in oil producing countries is another factor affecting prices.

World Scenario-

As of now four things are affecting the prices. Firstly, demand is low due to weak economic activity worldwide. Secondly, there is a growing movement towards other fuels, like solar energy. Thirdly, USA has become the world's largest producer of oil. High prices spurred companies in the US and Canada to start drilling for new crude in North Dakota's shale formations leading to increase in supply. Though US does not export oil but it is importing less now creating spare supply. Finally, most of the OPEC members have decided not to cut oil supplies as this would affect their market share. For countries like Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries such low prices hardly matter as it cost them only around $5-6 per barrel to produce oil. The main problem is with countries like Russia and Iran where cost of production is much higher around $100 and oil forms a big part of their GDP.

Crude Prices Impact on India-

Oil is improtant for India. India imports more than two-third of its requirement. It forms approx 40 percent of India's total imports. A fall of $1 in oil will save the exchequer Rs. 40 billion and which will have three fold impact on the economy-

i) Fall in prices will help reduce the trade deficit.

ii) It will help reduce the subisides that governemnt has to provide to maintain prices of oil products.

iii) Fall in oil prices will have a soothing effect on inflation. Inflation has been hovering around 5 percent for sometime now.
